IT WAS AT WAR. IT WAS A CLASH OF THE NORTH VERSUS THE SOUTH, FOUGHT BETWEEN STATES SUPPORTING THE FEDERAL UNION – “THE NORTH” – AND THE SOUTHERN STATES. THE SOUTHERN STATES FORMED THE CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA – “THE CONFEDERACY” OR “THE SOUTH”. Anzac Day is the ideal way to mark the anniversary of the war to end all wars, the First World War. Another thought is: a remembrance garden. “Depending on your space you may choose a tree or something as small as a flowering plant,” said horticulturist Judy Horton.

“It’s not the size or longevity that counts but the significance to yourself and your family.” Ms Horton provides these suggestions as part of your remembrance garden.
FLANDERS POPPIES and their blood-red flowers – often marked with a black cross – are associated with remembrance, covering battlefields and the trenches of Western Europe. “It’s thought that the soil disturbance caused mass germination of poppy seeds,” said Ms Horton. “Flanders Poppy seeds are sown into pots of seedraising mix and transplanted carefully when the seedlings are large enough to handle. Poppy seedlings like a sunny, sheltered spot in the garden after the soil has cooled”.

ROSEMARY is probably the first plant that leaps to mind, said Ms Horton. Mainly because it’s been used as a symbol of remembrance since ancient times. She said these days it’s easy to find a spot for rosemary in the garden because there is such a proliferation of varieties, large and small.

CISTUS, or rock rose, became known as the Gallipoli rose because it grew and flowered so profusely on the Gallipoli hillsides. This pretty little Mediterranean shrubhas slightly hairy leaves and flowers that look just like pink or white roses, she said.

FORGET-ME-NOT, said Ms Horton, is so named because once you have these pretty flowers in your garden you’ll have them forever. These individual plants are short-lived but they seed so profusely that they will come up again and again.

WHITE LILIES often appear in lists of remembrance plants. “The all-time favourite in the perfumed Lilium Longiflorum – the November Lily or Christmas Lily, depending on the climate in which it’s grown,” said Ms Horton.

FRANK MORRIS COMMENT: It is believed that the first poppy day was an inventive idea by a French woman called Anna Guerin, later referred to as the “Poppy Lady From France”. Guerin was founder an American and French children’s charity. – FM.

Foodfrolico: Christmas Hamburger! Why are plant-based meat alternatives booming!

HAVE A BITE!

AUSTRALIAN SUPERMARKETS NOW OFFER MORE THAT 250 PLANT BASED MEAT-ALTERNATIVE PRODUCTS.

ADAPTED BY FRANK MORRIS

Not so long ago, plant-based eating was a novel concept, and meat alternatives in a supermarket were limited to a selection. Today, you can find a ‘plant-based’ or ‘vegan’ claim on a dizzying array of food products, from lasagne to schnitzels.

What is behind people’s perception of plant-based labels on packaged food, and do plant-based alternatives compare with their conventional version?

The number of new plant-based products on supermarket shelves has visibly increased; but the category that has really boomed is plant-based meat alternatives.

PLANT POWER, THE HUNGER FOR ALTERNATIVES. PLANT POWER IS BOOMING. AUSTRALIAN SURERMAKETS NOW OFFER MORE THAN 250 MEAT TYPE-VARIETYS.

A percentage of Australians agree with the statement, ”Packaged foods labelled as plant-based food are healthy”.

The CEO head of independent think tank Food Frontier haD this to say. He told CHOICE that its 2020 State of the Industry report shows that Australia’s plantbased meat sector grew exponentially from 2019 to 2020, doubling its manufacturing revenue and jobs.

“The number of new products in supermarkets like meat-free burgers, sausages and ready meals, also doubling in that time, with the category seeing 46% sales growth in retail”.

Australian supermarkets now offer more than 250 plant-based meat alternative product, “more than half of which are made by Australian companies” he says.
