FLASHBACK: Parry’s milk bars rekindle some fond memories!

THE 1950s REMEMBERED!

FRANK MORRIS

WHAT I REMEMBER OF THE 50s IS THE SIMPLICITY OF LIFE. I HAD EVERYTHING. I HAD HUNDREDS OF FRIENDS. I HAD MY BILLYCART, WHICH I USED TO RACE. I WAS A KEEN MARBLE PLAYER.

AND I WAS SENT TO A HIGH SCHOOL WHICH WAS ONLY A COUPLE OF TRAIN STATIONS AWAY.

FOR TWO YEARS, I LED THE LIFE OF RILEY. THEN OUT OF THE BLUE SOMEBODY MENTIONED “PARRY’S MILK BAR”. SO, WE WOULD HEAD OVER THE RAIL-LINE AND MAKE A QUICK DASH TO PARRY’S AND TOSS DOWN A BANANA SPLIT.

I USED TO GO TWO OR THREE TIMES A WEEK UNTIL I LEFT SCHOOL. IF I HAD RAN OUT OF MOOLAH, MY WELL-HEELED FRIENDS USED TO BACK ME UP.

APART FROM RUFFLING UP A FEW KIDS THAT USED TO IRK ME SOMEWHAT (AT LUNCH HOUR), I USED TO DREAM ABOUT PARRY’S.

WELL, PARRY’S IS BACK – JUST LIKE IT WAS IN THE 1950S. BUT MORE ABOUT THAT LATER ON.
IN THE 1940S, ZACHARIAS PANARETOS AND HIS WIFE, USING THE NAME OF JIM PARRY, OPENED UP THE FIRST PARRY’S MILK BAR.

NOEL KELLY, OF THE DEFUNCT ST GEORGE CALL NEWSPAPER, REMEMBERS PARRY’S AS IF IT WAS YESTERDAY.

‘IT WAS STONE’S THROW AWAY”, SAID KELLY. “IT WAS GEM. IT WAS THE ONLY PLACE OPEN ON THE WEEKEND AND LATE AT NIGHT. IT WAS A MEETING PLACE WHERE YOU WOULD GO FOR A HOT STRAWBERRY MILKSHAKE ON A WINTER’S NIGHT”.

BUT KELLY HAS THE DISTINCTION OF BEING THE GREAT, GREAT, GREAT GRANDSON OF THE FIRST FREE GREEK TO ARRIVE IN AUSTRALIA. THE GREEK HAD JUMPED SHIP IN 1832. THE PARRY FAMILY WENT ON TO OPEN MILK BARS ALL OVER SYDNEY.

A KYEEMAGH CONTRIBUTOR TO COLUMN EIGHT (THE HERALD) REINFORCED MY MEMORIES ABOUT PARRY’S MILK BARS WHEN SHE WROTE: “IN THE 1960s, MUM WOULD TAKE MY YOUNGER BROTHER AND I TO PARRY’S IN ROCKDALE.

“MY STANDARD ORDER WAS A CHOCOLATE MILK SHAKE POURED INTO A FANCY GLASS FROM THE ALUMINIUM CONTAINER.

“MY BROTHER’S STANDARD ORDER WAS A LIME SPINDER WITHOUT ICE-CREAM … AND NOTHING WOULD PERSUADE HIM OTHERWISE”.

GOOD ON YOU, PARRY’S.

FOODFROLICO: Brush up on your table manners: expert speaks out!

DON’T STICK YOUR ELBOW OUT WHEN EATING OR DRINKING. Below: THE PLACE FOR THE NAPKIN IS ON THE LAP. DON’T TIE IT AROUND YOUR NECK.

PLACE YOUR KNIFE AND FORK TOGETHER WHEN YOU HAVE FINISHED YOUR MEAL.

FRANK MORRIS

Here are the facts. “Good manners are as important as good grooming behaviour”, said the expert. “This is especially true of good table manners”.

Myself, I loathe bad table manners at any age, but especially in adults. As a journalist, I attended a host of functions, dinners and breakfasts during my tenure.

I am appalled to see this type of ‘tableau’ which sadly mystified me.

I also admit that my table-matters sometimes are not that perfect either. But, you see, I correct them. I remember what I was told as a lad growing up.

Some adults simply don’t know how eat properly; they haven’t been trained.

“Unfortunately, in this day of confused standards, manners are sometimes neglected”, says the expert. Maybe this series of illustrations, done by a person with skill and knowledge, will fill the bill.

MORE FOODFROLICO TABLE MANNERS NEXT YEAR.

BILLYCARTS OF THE CENTURY … I had to make a few changes!

FRANK MORRIS

In the Sunday comic, Ginger said: “I just love summer, Benny, don’t you?” Replied Benny: “It’s okay I guess.” “Okay!? … It’s the best!” said Ginger Meggs. Suddenly, Ginger become idyllic.

“There’s back yard cricket … the beach … watching tennis … and running the billycart down Deadman’s Hill”.
I used to ride it uphill and down dale to where the races were on. My billycart was named Racing Beauty, a ballbearing racer.

The lads were all there. All the billycarts are outfitted with ball-bearings or fancy pram wheels. I raced against a kid who had a speedster called Speedo.

At the start, he left me for dead. Halfway down the hill he hit a bump and he and Speedo parted company. I won the race; I called it ‘Deadman’s Hill’. I soon realised I had to make some changes, ballbearing-wise!

REMEMBER NEXT YEAR, IT’S GINGER MEGGS 100TH BIRTHDAY.

GRAND YEARS WILL APPEAR AGAIN ON NOVEMBER 30.
