Mother and Daughter, Jeanne Little and Katie

LADY GODIVA? NO, IT’S JEANNE LITTLE ON THE MIKE WALSH SHOW.

OUTRAGEOUS OUTFITS FROM JEANNE LITTLE’S WARDROBE.

FRANK MORRIS

OF ALL THE THINGS KATIE LITTLE INHERITED FROM HER LATE MOTHER, WHAT SHE CHERISHES MOST, IS THE VAST COLLECTION OF COSTUMES JEANNE CREATED IN HER TINY PADDINGTON SEWING ROOM, SAID THE PRIVATE SYDNEY COLUMN IN THE SUN-HERALD.

AUSTRALIAN TELEVISION ICON JEANNE LITTLE DIED LAST NOVEMBER AFTER A BATTLE WITH DEMENTIA. SHE WAS 82.

“THERE’S BITS OF BOTH MUM AND DAD (INTERIOR DECORATOR BARRY LITTLE) IN THEM, LIKE A SAMPLE OF CARPET FROM DAD’S BUSINESS THAT WAS USED IN THE BODICE OF ONE GOWN SHE WHIPPED UP”, KATIE TOLD PS.

“I CAN’T TELL YOU HOW MANY FEATHERS, SEQUINS, CRYSTALS, PLASTIC BANANAS AND JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING ELSE YOU CAN IMAGINE THAT’S IN THERE”.

THE POWERHOUSE MUSEUM WAS GIVEN THEIR CHANCE OF HAVING THE COSTUMES ON SHOW, BUT THE PERSON ON THE OTHER END OF THE PHONE HAD NO IDEA “WHO MUM WAS” KATIE SAID.

“I DON’T THINK THEY WERE THAT INTERESTED IN IT”. KATIE SAID SHE OFFERED THE CREATIONS WHEN “HER MOTHER MOVED INTO A NURSING HOME”.

EVEN JEANNE LITTLE’S FAN-BASE ALONE WOULD INFORM ME THAT THE POWERHOUSE MISSED OUT ON WORTHY OBJECTS.

THE ARTICLE CONTINUED: “JEANNE WAS FAMOUS FOR HER OUTRAGEOUS WARDROBE WHICH CONSISTED OF FROCKS MADE OUT OF TOAST, STEEL WOOL, TOILET CHAINS, MILK BOTTLE TOPS, AS WELL AS SAUGAGES, ICE-CREAM CONES AND HOT CHIPS FASHIONED INTO HATS”.

“I DONATED HER COSTUMES FROM THE MARLENE DIETRICH SHOW TO THE PERFORMING ARTS CENTRE IN MELBOURNE, BUT I’VE KEPT EVERYTHING ELSE”, KATIE TOLD PS.

JEANNE LITTLE’S MEMORIAL SERVICE WAS HELD AT THE ORPHEUM THEATRE OWNED BY FORMER CHAT-SHOW HOST MIKE WALSH.

NEXT: FINAL. MOTHER AND DAUGHTER. SAID JEANNE, “IF YOU EAT WITH SOMEONE, THAT’S THE SECRET. IT ALLOW YOU TO CONNECT”.

<< PS COLUMN IN THE SUN-HERALD WAS THE BASIS FOR THIS STORY.

Famous Women: She was the talk of the town for generations of readers!

RUTH PARK IN 1981. INSET: RUTH PARK, IN 1946, RECEIVING THE CHEQUE FROM THE HERALD.

THE NOVEL TOLD THE ENGROSSING STORY OF AN IRISH FAMILY WHO BROUGHT LIFE TO THE SLUMS WHERE THEY LIVED.

FRANK MORRIS

IN 1946, PARK WON THE INAUGURAL SYDNEY MORNING HERALD LITERARY AWARD COMPETITION FOR HARP IN THE SOUTH.

AFTER WINNING THE AWARD, PARK WAS SET TO BECOME ONE OF AUSTRALIA’S MOST MAGICAL WRITERS.

HER BOOK SERIES, THE MUDDLE-HEADED WOMBAT, WHICH HAD ITS DEBUT ON THE ABC IN 1957, IS ONE OF THE LITERARY ‘TREASURE’ KIDS YARNS THAT NEED SAVING.

RUTH PARK, A NEW ZEALANDER, WAS BORN IN AUGUST 1917. PARK’S FATHER WAS A ROAD BUILDERS’ LABOURER, AND A PITCH TENT WAS ALL SHE HAD FOR A HOME.

PARK SAID: “PROBABLY I AM A WRITER BECAUSE I HAD A SINGULAR CHILDHOOD. MY FIRST YEARS … I WAS LIKE A POSSUM OR A BEAR CUB ALL ALONE”.

THOUGH SHE HAD NO BOOKS IN THE HOUSE, PARK RECALLED THAT HER FATHER WAS “A STORYTELLER”, AND ENTERTAINING TO BOOT, WHO USED TO MANUFACTURE WILD TALES FROM SCOTTISH HISTORY LIKE A MAGICAN PULLING A RABBIT OUT OF A HAT.

SHE WAS BROUGHT UP IN THE SMALL NZ TOWN OF TE KUITI. THIS IS THE PLACE WHERE SHE STRUGGLED WITH POVERTY. THE NEXT HURDLE WAS WHEN SHE BEGAN TO FELL THE BITE OF THE GREAT DEPRESSION.

HER FATHER FELL ILL AND COULD LONGER SUPPORT HIS FAMILY, SO THEY MOVED TO AUCKLAND TO LIVE AND TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE CHARITY FROM RELATIVES THAT WAS OFFERED.

“WAS IT A WISE TO MOVE TO THE CITY”, SHE MUSES IN HER FIRST AUTOBIOGRAPHY, FENCE AROUND THE CUCKOO. “AS AN ADULT I’D SAY NO,

PARK IS ONE OF AUSTRALIA’S MOST DISTINGUISHED AND WIDELY READ WRITERS OF ALL TIME.

MORE ABOUT RUTH PARK …
RUTH PARK AND D’ARCY NILAND, IN THEIR BIOGRAPHY DRUMS GO BANG, RELATE AN INTERESTING EPISODE IN THEIR MEETING WITH FRANK S. GREENOP, EDITOR OF MAN MAGAZINE, WHO LATER BECAME A MENTOR OF THE TWO WRITERS.
IT WAS NILAND’S INTRIGUING AND DISTURBING SHORT STORY, THE CRUCIFIXION; IT WAS ABOUT TWO MEN, ONE WHO HAS LEPROSY AND THE OTHER TB.
EDITORS OF MAGAZINES ALL OVER AUSTRALIA WERE CHURNED UP.
IT DID ONE GOOD THING: GREENOP WAS ELATED WITH THE STORY BECAUSE IT WAS EXCELLENT WRITING.
BUT IT AGITATED HIS INNER CALMNESS; THAT’S WAS GOOD. IT ALSO CHURNED HIM UP TOO. FM.

SHE WAS DETERMINED TO BECOME A WRITER. HER EARLY WORK WAS PUBLISHED IN THE CHILDREN’S SECTION OF THE NEW ZEALAND HERALD AT AGE 11.

AFTER MUCH SEARCHING, SHE SECURED A JOB ON THE AUCKLAND STAR AS A PROOFREADER, THEN, AFTER A WHILE SHE WAS TRANSFERED TO THE CHILDREN’S SECTION AS EDITOR.

DETERMINDED TO ADVANCE HER JOUNALIST CAREER SHE ACCEPTED A POSITION ON THE SAN FRANCISCO EXAMINER IN 1941. BUT HER TRAVEL PLAN WAS CANCELLED. JAPAN HAD BOMDED PEARL HARBOUR.

INSTEAD, SHE WAS OFFERED A POSITION ON ESRA NORTON’S DAILY MIRROR AND SHE SEIZED IT.

ON AN EARLIER VISIT TO AUSTRALIA IN 1940, D’ARCY NILAND, A FELLOW JOUNALIST AND WRITER, MET RUTH PARK. THEY HAD BEEN CORRESPONDING EVER SINCE.

IN 1942, D’ARCY AND RUTH WERE MARRIED FORMING A MARITAL AND LITERARY PARTNERSHIP STRIVING TO SURVIVE AS PROFESSIONAL FREELANCE WRITERS; WIDELY REGARDED AS AN IMPOSSIBLE DREAM AT THE TIME.

“THE MAJORITY OF RUTH PARK’S WRITING REMAINS IN PRINT”, SAID A PORFILE. “HER NOVELS ARE MONUMENTS TO THE HUMAN SPIRIT. HER BRILLIANCE AS A STORYTELLER … AND AN UNFORGETTABLE SENSE OF PLACE AND TIME HAVE CREATED AN ENDURING LEGACY”.

RUTH PARK DIED IN 2010. SHE WAS 83.

SOUCE: A PROFILE FROM HARP IN THE SOUTH PROGRAM WAS USED IN THE COMPILATION OF BACKGROUND AND DATES.
