PRINCESS DIANA’S DRESS: IT WILL BECOME PART OF HISTORY.

THE DESIGNERS, DAVID AND ELIZABETH.

THE DESIGNERS, THE EMANUELS, TELL THE STORY: “WHEN DIANA SAID, ‘WOULD YOU DO ME THE HONOUR OF MAKING MY WEDDING DRESS?’ IT WAS IN THAT SECOND THAT I KNEW THAT OUR LIVES WOULD NEVER BE THE SAME AGAIN”, SAYS ELIZABETH EMANUEL. “WE JUST PRESENTED HER WITH LOTS OF SKETCHES. SHE TRIED ON A SAMPLE WEDDING GOWN … WE KNEW THAT WAS THE PREFECT SILHOUETTE FOR HER”. DAVID EMANUEL, REALISING THAT LADY DIANA HADN’T HOOKED UP HER NET PETTICOATS TO THE UNDERSIDE OF HER DRESS, SAID, “THERE WAS ONLY ONE WAS TO FIND OUT, SO I WENT UNDERNEATH. AS I WAS RESURFACING FROM UNDER HER WEDDING GOWN, DIANA SAID. “DAVID, HAVE YOU MET THE QUEEN MOTHER?” WITH A RATHER QUIZZICAL LOOK ON HER FACE, STANDING THERE WAS THE QUEEN MOTHER.

Christmas Story: What a Life, the memoirs of Keith Weber -- Joe was my best mate!

WHEN YOU LOOKED IT WAS HARD TO SEE HIM.

I GRABBED THE BRANCH OF A TREE  … I WAS CRYING AND YELLING.

I WENT FOR A CLOSER LOOK TO TALK TO JOE, I FELT THAT IT WAS TIME I MET HIM.

KEITH WEBER

ADAPTED BY FRANK MORRIS

HE WAS MY ENEMY. JOE WAS MY FEAR.

I never met Joe, but my uncle and aunt, who brought me up, knew him. For he was the wooden spoon in my life; and Joe was always the man that would get after my backside to punish me when I was naughty.

He was available at all times; he was a real threat to me for he to guided me through my early life and kept me on the straight and narrow. I had a real fear of this guy who was a dark man, a giant of a man, who lived in the gully down the back; and wore sandshoes.

As it happened, there was a fern tree grove over a small pond there; and that’s where he lived. You had to look “When you looked it was hard to see him, but he was there; he was real; even if back then, looking from a distance, I did not see him. I knew Joe was there; and he would come and get me if he needed too.

As I got older I became more inquisitive. When I was five or six years old I was in my gumboots and I went for a closer look to talk to Joe; I felt it was time I met him. The fern leaves were ready to die, blacken and hang down; they tend to bulk up; and if you look deep into them, your imagination will run wild.

A WORD ABOUT XMAS …
AS AN ABBREVIATION OF ‘CHRISTMAS’, DOES NOT CONJURE UP IN ANY WAY THE PERIOD WHEN CHRIST WAS BORN IN BETHLEHEM. THERE’S NOTHING JOYFUL AT ALL ABOUT THE ABOVE EXPRESSION. ONLY AN INSIPID MIND COULD HAVE BEEN RESPONSIBLE FOR DREAMING UP AN IMPLAUSIBLE WORD. PEOPLE WHO FIND THE WORD “XMAS” AS LOATHSOME AS HEMINGWAY FOUND “RETIREMENT” SHOULD DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. CONTINUED BELOW …

The pond bank instantly gave way and I was in the water. Hovering over me was all the black rubbish. My mind took over as I knew I had done wrong. I yelled and screamed, “Help! Help! I knew at any moment Joe would grab me and beat me. I might drown; I might go down a big hole and disappear forever.

I was sinking and splashing. I grabbed the branch of a tree and pulled myself clear. I was crying and yelling for “Help!” and finally it came; my uncle took me in his arms. He then took me up the hill and dried me.

Joe did not appear. He did not try to rescue me. Maybe, he was not there; perhaps Joe did not exist. But Joe did keep me in line for my early years.

It was about ten years later, we cleared the gully to find a picturesque fern grove and a clear water pond flowing into a clear water creek. I realised then, I was Joe. A real Joe at that.

It saved a lot of spanked bottoms.

CHRISTMAS STORY: KEEP ALL YOUR AFFAIRS IN ORDER!

LOOKING AFTER ONE’S AFFAIRS COULD BECAME A NIGHTMARE!

FRANK MORRIS

Think about it! It’s easy now to recall the name of your solicitor, your bank and the different insurance companies or credit unions with which you have dealings.

What happens if you suddenly become ill? Who should look after your affairs then?

If you have not taken the necessary steps to put your affairs in order, it’s on the cards that sorting out your affairs could became a nightmare.

It’s essential that your family or carer have everything at their fingertips; every critical moment could count.

CHRISTMAS IS COMING …
TO ANYONE WHO WANTS TO KEEP A HEALTH JOURNAL, PLUS INFORMATION ON PERSONAL DETAILS AS WELL – DIAGNOSIS, MEDICATION, APPOINTMENTS, ETC. AVAILABLE FROM PERSONAL HEALTH JOURNAL ON HEALTHEPRIDE.COM.AU

All of us have the responsibility to keep a permanent record, detailing all the essential information: out assets, our liabilities, where the family is located; important names and addresses, and so on.

These documents should be stored in a safe place and be readily accessible in times of emergency.

The most simple and inexpensive way of doing it is to buy a small exercise book or notebook and label it: MY AFFAIRS. Show it to your family and tell them what it is, and where it can be found when it is needed.

Divide the book into sections: General information, relatives, bank accounts, credit unions, credit cards, income, investment, insurance policies, Centrelink, doctors, dentists, optician, church, clubs, income tax returns, and whatever else comes to mind.

In the back of the book affix copies of your Will and any other important papers.

If use a computer well and good, but make sure you leave a copy in a known location.

‘UNKNOWN SAILOR’ NAMED …
THE IDENTITY OF THE ‘UNKNOWN SAILOR’ HAS FINALLY BEEN REVEALED: HIS NAME IS ABEL SEAMAN THOMAS WELSBY CLARK, 21 YEAR OLD, FROM NEW FARM IN BRISBANE. CLARK WAS THE ONLY BODY RECOVERED FROM THE HMAS SYDNEY, WHICH SANK IN 1941, CLAIMING 645 LIVES. -- FM.

Inside our newspaper: The bombing of Pearl Harbour 80 years ago has started to fade into history

THE BOMBING OF USS ARIZONA, WHEN HER SHELL MAGAZINES IGNITED, WAS A TOTAL LOSS.

THE ARKANSAS DEMOCRAT-GAZETTE LOOKS AT PEARL HARBOUR AND THE KIDS AT SCHOOL AND DISCOVERED THAT IT’S FADING INTO THE DISTANT PAST. IT SOUNDS LIKE MEDICAL DISORDER, ACCORDING TO AN ANCIENT SAYING.

ADAPTED BY FRANK MORRIS

December 7, 1941. A date that was going to live in infamy is now fading into history. Those who can remember where they were when they heard the news on the family radio becomes fewer each year.

The generation that survived the Great Depression, and won the Second World War, is fast receding into the past.

The surprise attack on Pearl Harbour must sound like ancient history to the kids in school nowadays. After all, the Japanese are our friends now. What’s all this talk about a war with Japan?

Well, kids, read your history books. There was time when the term “Japanese” struck fear in an American; so much so that “we the people” gathered up Americans with Japanese backgrounds and put them put them in camps – right here in Arkansas.

As if our fellow Americans were sworn enemies; and just because they had exotic last names and dark hair. Those were different times, but oddly familiar.

PEARL HARBOUR’S INFAMY …
IT’S 80 YEARS SINCE PEARL HARBOUR WAS BOMBED TO SMITHEREENS. “I WANT TO TRY ANOTHER RAID”, SAID THE HEAD PILOT. REPLIED JAPANESE WAR ADMIRAL NAGUMO: “NO MORE ATTACK”.

By 1941, Europe and Asia has been embroiled in conflict for some time. But we were assured that the world’s troubles need not be ours. (Sound familiar?) After all, there were oceans to protect us from the bad guys. (Sound familiar?)

It all sounded reassuring enough. But what were we to do when the world’s problems came to America?

The Japanese attacked on Sunday morning December 7.

In a few hours, more than 2300 Americans were lost and a good part of the American fleet wiped out at Pearl Harbour. We shouldn’t have been surprised.

But, of course, we were!

What happens when the monster comes in search of us? As a wise man once commented, to every complex question there is always a simple answer – and the wrong one.

Remember Pearl Harbour. And learn from it.

WHEN SMOKE GETS IN YOUR EYES: MEN ARE CAPTIVATED WHEN THEIR AIRCRAFT AND OTHER SURROUNDINGS BILLOW IN SMOKE. “IT’S WAR!” SAID THE NEWSPAPERS.

Exclusive! Photos stored in old Brownie camera

THE AIRCRAFTS THAT WERE DAMAGED IN THE FATEFUL RAID.

FRANK MORRIS

THE PHOTOS WERE FOUND IN AN OLD BROWNIE CAMERA STORED IN A FOOT LOCKER IN THE 1940s. THEY WERE TAKEN BY A SAILOR WHO WAS ON A DESTROYER. WHEN THE PHOTOS HAD TO BE DEVELOPED, THEY WERE CLASSIFED AS “SPECTACULAR”. THE PHOTOS GIVE A WORMS-EYE VIEW OF THE WHOLE SUCCESSFUL BOMB RAID. “IT’S AMAZING HOW FILM COULD LAST SO LONG IN A CAMERA WITHOUT DISINTEGRATING”, SAID A FRIEND. THEY ARE A FANTASTIC PHOTOGRAPHIC RECORD TAKEN 68 YEARS AGO. SOME OF YOU WILL HAVE GO TO A MUSEUM TO SEE WHAT A BROWNIE CAMERA LOOKS LIKE?.

YOUR NEXT GRAND YEARS WILL APPEAR ON DECEMBER 15.
