VALE: ENTERTAINER EDDIE YOUNGBLOOD HAD ‘ELVIS’ DOWN TO A TEE!

EDDIE AT FULL THROTTLE PERFORMED HIS GOLDEN YEARS OF ELVIS IN THE 198O’S. BELOW: EDDIE HOLDS HIS 1984 MO AWARD ALOFT.

EDDIE, CAST AS JOSEPH IN THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT, WAS SEEN AS A “STROKE OF GENIUS”.

I’M NOT AN ELVIS IMPERSONATOR. I’M NOT. AND THAT’S ALL THERE IS TO IT.

FRANK MORRIS

ENTERTAINER EDDIE YOUNGBLOOD, WHO WAS THE MASTERMIND AND MEGA PERFORMER OF GOLDEN YEARS OF ELVIS SHOW, HAS DIED IN HOSPITAL.

EDDIE WAS 65. HIS WIFE MICHELLE WAS AT HIS BEDSIDE.

EDDIE VIGOROURLY DENIED HE WAS AN “IMPERSONATOR”, HE TOLD ME. “I’M AN INTERPRETER OF ELVIS PRESLEY. I SET OUT IN THE SHOW TO

RECAPTURE ELVIS’ GREAT STYLE AND MOVEMENT ON THE GLOBAL STAGE”.
“AT TIMES”, I BELIEVE, “HIS ACTIONS ON STAGE WOULD HAVE APPEALED TO ELVIS PRESLEY”.

THIS IS WHY, WHEN EDDIE WALKED ON STAGE IN AN ELVIS SPARLKLING LOOK-ALIKE OUTFIT, THE CROWD WENT WILD.

SINCE 1974 UNTIL MID 1990, YOUNGBLOOD HAD BEEN SWIVELLING HIS HIPS, TWANGING HIS GUITAR AND FLASHING HIS SMOULDERING GOOD LOOKS IN A POLISHED AND PROFESSIONAL INTERPRETATION OF ‘KING’ ELVIS AS THE WORLD KNEW HIM.

THERE WERE SEVERAL ‘ELVIS’ LOOK-ALIKES CURRENTLY GYRATING ON THE CLUB SCENE, BUT ONLY A HANDFUL ARE WORTH THEIR SALT. NOBODY COULD MATCH YOUNGBLOOD’S GRACE AND STYLE WHEN HE WAS PERFORMING.

YOUNGBLOOD’S GOLDEN YEARS OF ELVIS SHOW WAS HAILED BY THE CRITICS FROM TO COAST TO COAST.

IN A BACKSTAGE INTERVIEW, THE 27-YEAR-OLD PERFORMER MADE A POINT OF REFUTING THE POPULAR CLAIM THAT HE WAS A PRESLEY IMPERSONATOR. EDDIE JUST LAUGHED.

“I’M NOT AND THAT’S ALL THERE IS TO IT”, SAID EDDIE.

EDDIE WAS ONLY EIGHT YEARS OLD WHEN HE “GOT CAUGHT UP” IN THE

PRESLEY CULTURE. HE SAID: “WHEN I LIVED IN AMERICA I WAS EXPOSED TO THE FULL FORCE OF THE PRESLEY PHENOMENON”.

THERE WERE ABOUT 700 “ELVIS” ACTS TRYING TO CRACK THE BIG TIME ON THE US CABARET CIRCUIT, ACCORDING TO EDDIE.

WHEN HE ARRIVED BACK IN AUSTRALIA TO PUT HIS SHOW ON THE ROAD, EDDIE SAID CLUBS WERE ONLY “LUKEWARM” TOWARD THE ELVIS CONCEPT AT THE TIME.

“BUT WE KEPT AT IT, AND IT WAS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE THEY BEGAN TO REALISE THAT THE SHOW HAD HUGE POTENTIAL AND APPEAL.”

DECKED OUT IN A TIGHT-FITTING SEQUINNED OUTFIT, EDDIE PAID TRIBUTE IN GRAND STYE TO ELVIS’ LAS VEGAS YEARS, WHICH IS A HIGHSPOT OF THE SHOW.

IN THE PRESLEY FASHION, HE HANDED OUT SILK SCARVES TO THE ENRAPTURED PRESLEY FANS IN THE AUDIENCE.

AFTER WATCHING ONE OF EDDIE’S PERFORMANCES, A CRITIC LATER REPORTED THE “AUDIENCE WERE ACTUALLY JUMPING OUT OF THEIR SEATS TO TOUCH HIS LEGS”.

IN MARCH 1984, EDDIE WAS LAVISHED WITH CRITICAL ACCLAIM FOR HIS ROLE IN THE STAGE MUSICAL, JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT.

CASTING EDDIE IN THE MUSICAL WAS “A STROKE OF GENIUS” SAID A LEADING SYDNEY CRITIC. “HE WAS A REAL SHOW STOPPER”.

AT THE SAME TIME, HE SCORED A COVETED STATUETTE, THE MO AWARD, FOR HIS GOLDEN YEARS OF ELVIS. HOLDING HIS MO AWARD, EDDIE SAID “WHEN I WAS TOLD I’D WON I COULDN’T BELIEVE”.

NEXT DAY, I HEADLINED MY ARTICLE FOR A SYDNEY NEWSPAPER ON THE MO AWARDS: “EDDIE ROCKS BACK AS THE “KING”.

IN 1990S, WHEN HE HAD FINISHED PERFORMING, EDDIE TOOK OVER THE ROLE OF MARKETING MANAGER OF CLUB FORSTER & SPORTIES TUNCURRY, FORSTER.

FRANK MORRIS COMMENTS: MY WIFE AND I WATCHED THE FINAL SEND OFF FOR ENTERTAINER EDDIE YOUNGBLOOD ON STREAMED TV ON TUESDAY, MARCH 9. IT TOOK PLACE FROM CLUB FORSTER, FORSTER, NSW. THE VETERAN ENTERTAINER DOUG PARKINSON, WHO SENT AN EMAIL, DECRIBES EDDIE’S GOLDEN YEARS OF ELVIS AS “A TRIBUTE” TO THE GREAT ELVIS PRESLEY.

EASTER PARADE: COOK UP SOME EASTER BUNNY BISCUITS FOR THE GRANDKIDS!

MAKE THEM … AND THEN SERVE THEM OUT.

WILL SERVE 16 – WHAT A TREAT THEY WILL BE.

SELECTED BY FRANK MORRIS

THE GRANDKIDS WILL THINK IT IS CHRISTMAS TIME AGAIN! “NO, THESE ARE BUNNY BISCUITS, THEY ARE AN EASTER DELIGHT. AND YOU EAT THEM AT EASTER TIME.” THEY’RE TANTALISINGLY TEMPTING AND BEAUTIFUL TO MUNCH ON. THEY’RE TRADITIONAL EASTER FARE.

INGREDIENTS
1/2 cup caster sugar.
1 egg yolk.
2 ½ tablespoon golden syrup.
2 cups plain flour.
1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda.
3 teaspoons ground ginger.
1 ½ teaspoons ground cinnamon.
1 cup pure icing sugar, sifted.
½ small lemon juiced.
Ribbon for decoration.

METHOD
Preheat oven to 180 c. Line 2 baking trays with baking paper.

Using an electric mixer, cream butter and caster sugar until pale and creamy. Add egg yolk and golden syrup. Beat to combine. Sift flour, bicarbonate soda, ginger and cinnamon together over butter mixture. Stir with wooden spoon to form a stiff dough.

Press dough into a 10cm round. Roll out between 2 sheets of baking paper until 5mm thick. Place between baking paper on a tray. Refrigerate for 20 minutes or until firm.

Using an 8cm rabbit shaped biscuit cutter, cut 16 biscuits from dough. Place on prepared trays. Using a skewer, punch 1 hole at the top of each biscuit and make small indentations on biscuits to decorate.

Bake for 15 minutes or until firm to touch. Allow to cool on trays (biscuits will firm further after cooling).

Sift icing sugar into a bowl. Gradually add 1 tablespoon lemon juice and stir until icing is smooth. Spoon into small snap-lock bag. Squeeze out air and seal. Using scissors, snip 1 corner from bag and pipe icing onto biscuits. Allow icing to set. Thread ribbon through holes. Serve.

You can bake biscuits up to 3 days ahead and store in airtight container. – Recipe by Michelle Noerianto.

Forgotten Britain: More in glorious colours – the first time – Laurel and Hardy!

ANOTHER FINE MESS YOU’VE GOT ME INTO, CRIES STAN LAUREL.

AMERICAN COMEDY ACTOR OLIVER HARDYAND HIS BRITISH-PARTNER, STAN LAUREL, WERE “ARRESTED” FOR LOITERING IN A RAILWAY STATION.

THE REASON BEING, THAT THEY WANTED TO DO A PUBLICITY SHOT FOR THEIR STAGE SHOW, A SPOT OF TROUBLE, WHICH TOURED THE UK IN 1952.
IN 1953, THEY TOURED IRELAND AND BOTH STAN AND LAUREL KNEW THAT THEIR FILM CAREER WAS OVER. THEIR BEST MOVIES WERE MORE THAN A DECADE GONE.

MEANWHILE, STAN AND OLLIE COULD NOT FIGURE OUT ALL THE HOOPLA – THE TOOTING OF BOAT WHISTLES -- A HUGE CROWD ON THE DOCK WHICH WERE CHEERING MADLY.

“YOU’D THINK PEOPLE WOULD FORGET”, SAID STAN, “BUT THEY DON’T.”
“ALL THE CHURCH BELLS IN COBH STARTED TO RING OUT OUR THEME SONG …”

CHUCK YEAGER: The first pilot to fly faster the sound!

CHUCK YEAGER CLOCKS UP 900 MPH TO BREAK THE SOUND BARRIER. Below: YEAGER REINACTS THE NEAR-FATAL FLIGHT IN THE NF-104 WHICH MALFUNCTIONS AT 7000 FEET.

IN 1984, THE RIGHT STUFF IS A FILM ABOUT THE MEN WHO WERE ON THRESHOLD OF THE SPACE AGE.

REVIEW BY FRANK MORRIS

THE RIGHT STUFF WAS WHAT PILOTS HAD TO HAVE IN THEIR ATTEMPT TO ENTER THE SPACE AGE! WHEN WORLD WAR 11 ENDED, MANY OF THE PILOTS REMAINED ATTACHED THE MILITARY.

THE MOST ADVENTUROUS ONES, A SELECT FEW, INCLUDING CHUCK YEAGER, HEADED FOR MUROC IN THE LONELY, WINDSWEPT REGIONS OF THE MOJAVE DESERT, TOGETHER WITH THEIR DEVOTED, IF ANXIOUS, WIVES.

THEIR HOME FOR THE NEXT FEW YEARS WAS A BARREN BED LAKE.THEIR JOB WAS TESTING THE FLEDGLING X-1 ROCKET PLANES. THEY WERE ON THE THRESHOLD OF THE SPACE AGE.

AMONG THIS BAND OF ADVENTURERS WERE THOSE WHO HAD THE RIGHT STUFF, A QUALITY THAT WAS NEVER NAMED, NEVER TALKED ABOUT.

CHUCK YEAGER TOO HAD THE RIGHT STUFF.

THE MOVIE, THE RIGHT STUFF, OPENED IN AUSTRALIA MARCH, 1984, IS A GUT-STIRRING ADVENTURE STORY … AND REAL PEOPLE.

IT OPENS WITH YEAGER BECOMING THE FIRST PERSON TO BREAK THE SOUND BARRIER – OCTOBER 14, 1947 – AND TRACES THE DARING EXPLOITS OF THE TRAIL-BLAZING MERCURY ASTRONAUTS TWELVE YEARS LATER.

WITH AMERICA AND THE SOVIET UNION RACING NECK AND NECK TOWARDS THE OUTER LIMITS OF SPACE, THE ASTRONAUTS WERE ELEVATED AS NATIONAL HEROES LONG BEFORE THEIR FIRST FLIGHT.

ALTHOUGH THE NEWS MEDIA DEPICTED THEM AS FLYING SAINTS, OR AS NASA-CONTROLLED ROBOT’S; THEY WERE NEITHER.

THE RIGHT STUFF CAPTURED THE DRAMA AND DANGERS OF EARLY ROCKET FLIGHT AND THE TRAUMATIC PROBLEMS THAT CAME WITH FAME AND CELEBRITY, FOR WHICH THERE WAS NO TRAINING.

THE FILM SHIFTS FROM THE LONELY OUTPOST AT MOROC, NOW EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, TO FLORIDA AND TEXAS. IT FOLLOWS YEAGER AND THE CHOSEN SEVEN INTO SPACE.

CAST:

SAM SHEPARD AS CHUCK YEAGER, BARBARA HERSHEY (HIS WIFE), KIM STANLEY, DONALD MOFFAT AND ED HARRIS AS JOHN GLENN.
