The coast is clear for the Coastal Pacific!

KiwiRail have announced plans to reinstate the passenger service between Christchurch and Picton in time for the busy summer period. The passenger service, which has been out-of-action since the 7.8-magnitude earthquake in November 2016, is scheduled to return 01 December 2018. Timetables will be slightly altered to ensure sufficient time is taken to slowly wear in the newly laid tracks.

New footage of the rebuild of the Kaikoura rail system is currently being formatted and is to be made available on a DVD to display to travellers on our Rail Tours as a good general interest story. Once available, the DVD will be distributed to Crew via Malcolm or Jules.

How does the return of the Coastal Pacific from 01 December 2018 impact GPT Rail tours?

19 Day Ultimate Rail tours (tour code: UGPRC)
Prior to 01 December, Malcolm will issue each traveller with a refund for the Coastal Pacific train journey at tour despatch on the morning of Day 2.

From 01 December, travellers will join the Coastal Pacific train journey in Picton and disembark in Kaikoura for coach travel to Christchurch arriving approximately 8.30pm. Crew are to refer to their Tour Instructions for full details.

19 Day Rail, Cruise & Coach tours (tour code: GPR)
Prior to 01 December, Malcolm will issue each traveller with a refund for the Coastal Pacific train journey at tour despatch on the morning of Day 2.

From 01 December, travellers will join the Coastal Pacific train journey in Picton and disembark in Christchurch arriving approximately 8.30pm. A transfer is to be provided from Christchurch Railway Station to the Distinction Hotel. Crew are to refer to their Tour Instructions for full details.
