Explore the vibrant city of Christchurch
Christchurch is a revitalised city not to be missed, located in the heart of New Zealand’s South Island.
The city has undergone enormous transformation in the past 10 years after a tragic 6.3-magnitude earthquake in 2011, which reduced 80% of the city centre to rubble.
Today, the streets of Christchurch are bustling, following a period of sustained construction: first, commercial development of glass-fronted office blocks and high-end retail space – and then civic and cultural buildings, which were either restored or replaced.
You can experience the dynamic heart of Christchurch with its cardboard cathedral, colourful street art and container shopping mall.

The central city is filled with cutting-edge architecture alongside some of the oldest buildings in New Zealand. The Avon River intersects the city, bringing a natural landscape to the urban environment. Ride the historic tram or settle into one of the eclectic cafés and restaurants.

Board your classic Punt at the historic Antigua Boat Sheds landing, your Edwardian Punter will guide you quietly past trailing willows, woodlands and leafy banks as you absorb the beauty of Christchurch’s Hagley Park.
Discover Christchurch’s Botanic Gardens, the centrepiece of the ‘Garden City’. Take an edible tour, or wander at your own pace among diverse plants, flowers and sculptures.
Christchurch is the basecamp for South Island exploration. The surrounding Canterbury region offers visitors unforgettable journeys and picturesque towns, zen-like retreats and thrill-seeking opportunities.
Escape to Hanmer Springs for a thermal soak, or north to KaikÅura to encounter the local wildlife.
