Christchurch UpdateZ

Christchurch, known as the Garden City, is the gateway to the South Island and the spectacular experiences your clients will have within the South Island.

In 2010 and 2011, earthquakes destroyed many of the historic centre’s stone-built buildings and it is now a vibrant city in transition.  The growth in Christchurch isn’t stopping with three new hotels opening very soon, including the Distinction Hotel which Grand Pacific Tours will be using for some of our 2017/18 season tours.

Distinction Hotel Christchurch (the former Millennium hotel) is scheduled to open early 2018 having been repaired and refurbished.  With 179 rooms, this hotel is centrally located in the revitalised Cathedral Square and ideally positioned only a few minutes’ walk from the brand new Christchurch Convention Centre.

With over 836 cafes and restaurants in Christchurch, there is no shortage of great food on offer as the city welcomes back old restaurants and introduces new ones. Christchurch has seen a rise in the number of restaurants offering locally sourced food, organic options and shared plates.

Larnach Castle - 50th Anniversary

March 2017 marked 50 years of restoration and innovation at Larnach Castle by the Barker Family. In 1967, Margaret and Barry Barker purchased Larnach Castle which at that time was unoccupied and neglected. This year acknowledges the work carried out initially by Barry and Margaret Barker, and the progress that continues to happen under the leadership of their son Norcombe Barker. Not only has the family restored and furnished the Castle, but also created a garden within the historic framework.

The Castle, open 365 days a year, hosts over 100,000 visitors annually through its self-guided and guided tours, licensed café and the luxurious Camp Estate.

Your clients will visit Larnach Castle on all Grand Pacific Tours core tours.
