Queenstown secures its place on global Monopoly Board

New Zealand’s adventure capital, Queenstown has yet another grand accolade to add to its already extensive collection.

The South Island alpine-playground has successfully competed against some of the world’s top destinations to secure its position on the global Monopoly Here and Now: World Edition board game. 

Queenstown was New Zealand’s only nominated destination and competed against 80 cities from around the world all vying for the public vote to make it on to the Board.   In total, around 4 million votes were received from 182 countries around the world.

International popularity

Destination Queenstown CEO, Graham Budd, says the result is testament to Queenstown’s international popularity and it was a huge achievement to beat out other global hot spots to make the board.

“We are extremely excited Queenstown has made it on to the board and it is fantastic to see NZ’s premier holiday destination up there with the best of them on this global edition game.

“Not only is this great for Queenstown but also for New Zealand, the new Monopoly Here and Now: World Edition game will no doubt be sold millions of times over around the world, each time helping to promote New Zealand,” says Mr Budd.

Getting on the board was based on the number of people who voted online. The twenty cities that received the most votes are now part of Monopoly history on the World Edition Monopoly Here & Now game board.

Queenstown joins the likes of Peru, Mexico City, London, New York and Sydney on the World Edition of the game.

The Monopoly Here and Now: World Edition board game will be available worldwide for purchase from September and will feature iconic landmark tokens and new gameplay where players race round the board to visit as many locations as possible, collecting passport stamps along the way. Players will collect cash from visitor fees when opponents land on their locations and the first player to fill their passport wins.
