Church of the Good Shepherd

Nestled on the edge of Tekapo Lake, with its shimmering turquoise waters mirroring the stunning Southern Alps, stands the Church of the Good Shepherd—a stoic tribute to the pioneers of the Mackenzie Country.  

Erected in 1935, this stone sanctuary serves as a place of worship for congregations of various faiths, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape through its altar window. 

The church's design was carefully crafted to blend seamlessly with its alpine environment. Local stone, left unchipped and adorned with lichen, gives the structure a natural appearance, while the surrounding matagouri bushes and rocks were left undisturbed.  

Adjacent to the church stands a statue honoring the border collies brought by Scottish shepherds to the area in the 19th century. These faithful companions played a vital role in the region's pastoral industry, symbolizing the resilience and resourcefulness of early settlers.
